Love your liver

Love your liver

When looking at the vitally important roles the liver plays, we see how important a healthy liver is. Just like every house needs a good spring clean from time to time, the liver is the most important ‘room’ in the body to give a good sweep out. It’s said that in the body, symbolically, the heart represents the mother and the liver the father. Resolve to keep the ‘father’ of your house functioning at maximum capacity. Some of the main functions of the liver are:

  1. The liver stores and releases glucose as the body needs it.
  2. It stores iron that has been processed from haemoglobin.
  3. The liver clears the blood from drugs and harmful substances. It’s where all medication is metabolized.
  4. It produces bile that helps break down fat in the small intestines during digestion.
  5. Importantly, the liver changes certain chemicals into more useable forms like harmful ammonia to urea and silica to nutritional calcium.

Not only do toxins get processed in the liver but emotions too, especially those like anger. This explains why it is fairly common for individuals to experience a flare-up of emotions a few days into an intense detox. Taking time out for meditation and breathing techniques are a vital part of dealing with emotional build-up. It is helpful to include products like MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) and Chlorella to a detox programme. Both of them have toxin neutralising properties that bond with toxins (especially heavy metals) and make it easier for toxins to leave the body. The easiest way to give your liver a rest is to have certain days in the week where you have no alcohol or caffeine.

Animal protein also provides quite a lot of work for the liver. You might decide to join in on the Meat Free Monday movement and turn it into a fun activity where family members take turns to make veggie dishes.

Doing a 21-day detox once or twice a year is a beneficial practice and great habit to get into. You may want to try a few days of only drinking a detox juice. You would need to consult a health practitioner though if you are going the fasting route. Although a juice fast might sound intense, nutrients are delivered in a perfect bio-available form directly to the cells. When the body has ample nutrients it stops sending out hunger pangs and cravings. Juicing is an excellent way to give your liver a break; to flush out toxins, and allow it to operate at maximum capacity.

Your liver detox need not be for 21days if this seems too much of a challenge. You could start with 7 days or even 3 days or you could even just swap your morning breakfast for a green juice. Just one step in the right direction will bring you benefits. Remember, the body is continuously healing itself and any help you provide will be rewarded. Having a healthy, fully functional body is the best high a person can ever experience

Guidelines for a safe detox:

Cleaning the liver is a great goal for a detoxification programme. It should be a gentle process and shouldn’t add strain to an exhausted liver.

Start with a cleansing juice
Start the first few days with a juice fast of fresh organic apple, cucumber and lemon juice. Cucumber provides a cooling aspect to hot emotional livers. It’s important to note that with a masticating juicer like the Oscar, your juice will keep its nutritional value for a full day in the fridge. A blade or centrifugal juicer only stays protected from oxidation for up to 45 minutes.

Remove salt and sugar
Remove all salt and sugar from your diet. It’s possible that blood pressure might increase during the first part of the detox as toxins move from the lymph into the bloodstream ready to be excreted from the body. If you feel like something sweet, have a little honey with Dandelion tea – great for detoxing the liver. C

Change animal protein to plant protein
During this time swap animal protein for high-quality plant protein, like hemp seeds, chia and goji berries, all complete protein sources with a high profile of amino acids. Add the superfood Maca (not a complete protein, it has 17 of the 18 essential amino acids) and you have a beneficial hormone component.

Cut alcohol and caffeine
Remove all alcohol and caffeine. Drink 2 litres of good quality spring water daily to facilitate detoxification.

Did you know?

The liver has a remarkable capacity to regenerate. Even after surgical removal or chemical injury, only 25% of the original liver mass is needed to regenerate back to its full size.

Try this

Use specific products to help your liver rejuvenate:

  • Goji berries are a tonic adaptogen and will enhance the livers’ ability to detox.
  • Aloe Vera activates glutathione production by the liver, a crucial antioxidant in the production of white blood cells.
  • Milk Thistle is known for its restorative nature for liver damaged by alcohol and drug abuse.

The Pro's of Probiotics

The Pro’s of Probiotics

Learn the difference between prebiotics and probiotics, see the benefits of fermented food and try out a recipe for sauerkraut. Digestion has never been better.

Did you know?

Our bacterial cells outnumber our human cells by 10 to 1. According to Martin Hum, PhD, DHD ‘ over 400 types of micro-organisms co-exist in a complex ecosystem within our gut. We have literally trillions of bacteria living in our bodies. Where traditionally we’ve thought of bacteria in a very negative sense, we’re now lauding the benefits of these microbes and are seeing them as key to a host of health issues.

More than 2000 years ago, Hippocrates said ‘all disease begins in the gut.’ Two key components of good gut health are digestive enzymes (what’s the use of eating good food when your digestive system isn’t working optimally) and pre and probiotics. Prebiotics can be thought of as fertilizer for good bacteria. They encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Plant fibre from fruits and vegetables contain the components required for this, which are known as oligosaccharides. They are found in foods like onion, garlic, bananas, asparagus, leeks and Jerusalem artichokes.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms that remain intact throughout the digestive process and deliver healthy bacteria directly to the large intestine. They’re also available from foods and in supplement form. The most well-known probiotics in supplements are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium bifidum. These beneficial bacteria or ‘friendly micro-organisms’ in the digestive tract affect the health of our entire system.

A good balance of healthy bacteria will:

  1. Boost the immune system.
  2. Lower cholesterol.
  3. Reduce allergic reactions to food and the environment.
  4. Help prevent constipation.
  5. Reduce intestinal inflammation.
  6. Suppress the growth of harmful micro-organisms.
  7. Help manufacture Vitamin K, B-group vitamins, digestive enzymes and essential fatty acids.
  8. Help prevent lactose intolerance by supporting lactose digestion.

Our systems are often depleted of digestive enzymes because of the way we prepare, grow and process our food. Antibiotics, overconsumption of alcohol and chlorinated water, are some of the factors responsible for emptying our healthy internal microbe stores. Steroids, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptives, HRT and chemotherapy also disrupt the micro-organism habitat.

Recent studies show the connection between leaky gut, celiac disease and IBS with a lack of digestive enzyme and pro-biotics. Many ‘anti-bacterial’ products are advertised as great home cleaning agents but evidence shows the use of antibacterial and antimicrobial cleaning products, particularly in combination with the over-prescription of antibiotics, may produce strains of multi-resistant organisms.

New varieties of cleaning products without anti-bacterial agents are becoming more popular and are said to be the cleaning agents of the future. There is evidence that children with prolonged exposure to anti-bacterial agents have a higher chance of developing allergies and scientists believe this could be because of reduced exposure to bacteria.

Besides the gut, probiotics are also being used in beauty products for the skin. Think of the homemade beauty mask with yoghurt. Beauty brands are catching onto the fact that probiotics might just be the next big advance in skincare, and are researching appropriate applications in their beauty solutions.

Eating fermented food is a great way to balance the microbiome communities in the gut for optimum overall health. Fermented foods like kimchi, milk and water kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut are only a few of the foods that contain beneficial healthy bacteria. If you’re planning on including probiotic foods in your diet, here’s a recipe for sauerkraut to get you started.

DIY Sauerkraut

Easily makes 5 x 500mm glass jars. Make sure you use organic vegetables or they may not ferment.

Ingredients:
500g white cabbage cut into ribbons
500g red cabbage cut into ribbons
2 or 3g sea salt
2 carrots finely grated
3 garlic cloves
A pinch of fennel seeds
Springwater

Method:
Sprinkle salt over the cabbage and use your hands to massage the salt into the cabbage. You will notice a watery salt solution drawing out from the cabbage leaves. In a mixing bowl, add all the ingredients and mix evenly. Pack firmly into a glass jar with a tight seal lever handle. The water from the cabbage should be enough to cover the contents. If not, add some spring water. Avoid using tap water as the chlorine in tap water will inhibit the growth of healthy bacteria.

Use a weight to push the cabbage mixture down into the jar. It’s best to use a ceramic one so as not to interfere with the fermentation process. I leave mine in a dark cupboard for a month before opening. On opening, built-up gasses will release and you’ll smell a lovely fermented smell.

This is evidence of all the healthy bacteria grown in the optimum environment you have created.

ENJOY!

Multiply your healthy habits

Multiply your healthy habits

If you start off implementing just one good habit, it’s catchy and will grow into another one. Soon you will have a plethora of good habits and a lifestyle you love.

When studying Raw Nutrition with David Wolfe, one of the course material chapters deals with the magical, levitating, health-boosting benefits of spring water. David speaks of something called the ‘water multiplication phenomenon’.

This starts off with a small trickle of water that comes out the ground, and with the help of universal chemistry turns onto a full gushing stream. The negative ions of the earth combine with the positive atoms of the atmosphere to create water in its purest form. This water happens to be completely sterile at 4 degrees, which is the temperature of spring water at its point of origin. From personal experience, I find that healthy habits follow the exact same pattern. For me, it normally starts with losing my taste for alcohol. Once I change that habit, within a few days, my body starts asking for green juices and lots of water. Then, when waking up in the morning all I can think of is going for a forest walk, breathing in fresh air and feeling grass under my bare feet.

A craving for starchy food is the next to go along with my sweet tooth craving. It’s amazing that once you are in this health zone ‘your senses are heightened and it’s easy to spot any negative energy or unhealthy elements.

On opening my fridge door, the preservative-laden, sugar-filled bottle of processed food looks like a sore thumb between the carrots, apples and ginger waiting to make their trip to the juicer. Over time I have come to realize that this is not how most people’s bodies communicate with them. That’s why I have listed some natural progress steps to help educate your body towards a naturally healthy, detoxed state.

1.    Replace any alcoholic, sugary or artificially sweetened drinks with pure spring water.

I make an adventure out of loading water bottles into the car and filling them with Newlands spring water every second week. When I am at a restaurant, I ask for my spring water in a wine glass with a slice of lemon. Before going to bed, I fill a consul glass container with spring water and lemon slices to go into the fridge. In the morning it will be the first thing you see when you open the door. Putting a decanter on your desk filled with spring water, mint, cucumber and a single slice of lemon means you are likely to choose water all day long.

2.    Remove all unhealthy foods from your fridge and grocery cupboard and replace them with healthy alternatives.

A healthy lifestyle is never one that makes you feel deprived. On the contrary, it is an act of love towards yourself to allow only good things to enter your body. Clean your home by filling a box with all the unhealthy products that have sneaked their way into the house (include all those well-meant gifts that arrived over the festive season) and drop it off at a shelter or soup kitchen.

A visit to a farmers market or a Wellness Warehouse will leave you amazed at all the lovely organic, gluten-free, preservative-free, sugar-free, raw treats and foods available. My treat is raw honey and raw organic almond butter spread on a raw seed cracker for a ‘late night up in bed with a good book’ treat.  I also keep a variety of my favourite teas.

3.    Make time in your schedule for outdoor activities.

On a Sunday night, I have a look at my upcoming week, I slot in my yoga sessions and then look to see where I have open mornings. This I block as self-development time. You will find the time you spend having a forest or beach walk results in a super productive day.  You don’t need to feel guilty about taking this time out for yourself. Put your clothing, water bottle and shoes out the night before, set your alarm clock, and enjoy.

4.    Using technology for your health development.

We spend such a big part of our day in front of our computers, so why not use this to enhance your health journey? Look for educational health videos or YouTube clips. Join health and wellness forums ‘ look for hiking groups in your area. I also love looking for new vegan, healthy raw recipes when I am in need of a little mental break. You will find with all these action steps in place, your body is going to love what you are doing so much, it is just going to want more of the good stuff.

DID YOU KNOW?

Imagination can be used to promote a more positive mood. Recent evidence using picture-word cues suggests that evoking mental imagery has a more powerful impact on emotion than using verbal language.

Pineapple and Coconut tart – guilt free and plant based

Here follows a full disclaimer : When the temperature hits 28degrees Celsius and every Capetonian runs to the beach, I retreat back indoors and into the comfy surrounds of my kitchen.

The main cause for excitement is that my number one cooking essential for every delicious dessert that you can imagine; my coconut oil, is in its yummy, runny, lovely to work with natural state. Just looking at the opaque liquid in its glass bottle on my kitchen shelf 

Hmmmmmm my imagination is running wild with pictures of styled Raw Cheesecakes, Raw Chocolate tarts, Raw Avo Lemon tart …. you get the picture , right ?

All naturally plant based and without any gluten or refined sugar. It is summer after all and part of self-care and self-love is respecting your body and everything you put into it.

It is as easy as blending:

3 heaped cups of pineapple

1 cup of coconut oil

1T lemon juice

2T Agave

Pinch of salt

and pouring that glorious oozing liquid over a tart base made of:

1 cup of cashews,

½ cup of desiccated coconut

½ cup of coconut oil

Ground to a cookie crumb consistency in your favourite food-processor.

Put the whole lot in the freezer for 4 hours.

This recipe works best when using the small individual metal pie dishes with the removable metal plate, or like I did this time, in one 25cm pie dish with removable bottom.
I normally take the little precious gems out of the freezer 30min before serving to slightly capture the ooze character of the coconut oil.
When last have you been able to have your slice of tart and get right into that swim suit with not a guilty thought in site?
Coconut oil is anti-bacterial , anti-fungal and with almost 43mg of lauric Acid per 100ml you have a built in acne fighter and any microbial infections covered.  Zero cholesterol and zero carbs.

Pineapple, our hero of the moment is packed with Vitamin C, B Vitamins, fibre and Manganese.

Pineapple also contain the active ingredient Bromelain which is known for its function to reduce inflammation, swelling aids with wound healing – particularly burns and also plays an active role in promoting healthy digestion.

Welcome to the world of yummi , healthy , raw baking ! xx

Fats – all you ever wanted to know with no guilt

This article has been inspired by a combination of factors : the shocked looks I get when telling people how many avo’s and liters of olive oil I consume in a month , putting an end to the belief that fats only equal expanded waistline and the super inspirational book : Fats that Heal Fats that Kill written by Udo Erasmus.

All the scientific references are based on the phenominal research done by Udo Erasmus – with a little input from my own background as an Analytical Chemist.

Just as all proteins are not equal , all fats are most definitly not equal. It is simply impossible to write an articles on the good and the bad of fats without adding a little bit of biology into the context. We will look at two main groups : Saturated Fatty Acids ( SaFAs ) and Unsaturated Fatty Acids ( UFAs). Below is a scetch of each one’s molecular structure.

Butyric Acid

( Butyric Acid – found in butter )

In short – the Saturated Fatty Acids have no double bonds and any of them that contain more than 12 Carbons are called long-chain SaFAs. They are insoluble in water , carry no electrical charge – making them stick together , with this resulting in the detrimental role they play in Cardiovascular disease by plague formation deposited onto cells , organs and arteries. Udo calls them sluggish molecules.

They are especially in abundance in beef , mutton , pork and dairy products.

Saturated Fatty Acids also decrease oxygen supply to our tissues , this makes our red blood cells stick together , less mobile – resulting in less oxygen being delivered to the cells.

A quick worth mention is that short-chain and medium-chain SaFAs with Carbon counts up to 12 such as Butyric acid ( 4 Carbons ) helps feed the friendly bacteria in our colons , Caprylic acid ( 8 Carbons ) inhibit growth of yeast and candida and Medium-chain SaFAs ( 6 – 12 Carbons ) are often used by athletes before work outs for a boost of energy.

A very well known medium-chain SaFAs is Coconut oil. It contains : Caprylic acid , Capric acid ( 10 Carbons ) and Lauric acid ( 12 Carbons ).All of these show incredible immune enhancing properties due to their natural anti-viral, anti-microbial , anti fungal properties. Laurel acid is know for it’s anti-viral properties. The recommended intake per day is 1 – 4 tablespoons. I find it an easy add on to my Chia Meal Breakfast ( Rawlicious brand ) or smoothy blend.

At this point I need to introduce a well known bad element namely : Refined Sugar.

Refined Sugar is almost always broken down into fats and mostly the unwanted SaFAs. Increased blood sugar also interferes with the release of Linoleic acid ( LA ) a crucial Essential Fatty Acid ( EFAs) I will mention a little later.

Oleic acid

( Oleic acid – found in avocado’s )

Unsaturated Fatty Acids ( UFAs ) contain one or more double bond between their carbon atoms , as is noticeable in the sketch above of Oleic acid. Notice that it is the Hydrogen atom ( H ) – two at each double bond that has been given up. This simple shift in structure contributes to all the amazing health benefits we get from UFAs.

Each UFAs has it’s own unique quality and benefit to our wellbeing as listed below:

  1. Oleic acid ( 18 carbons , double bond between 9 and 10 ) – found in olives , avocado , cashews , peanuts , pistachio , macadamia and pecan nuts and keeps our arteries supple.

In his book : Eating for Beauty by my favorite mentor and general genius David (Avocado) Wolfe makes mention of high Oleic acid content in avocado , contributing to beautiful skin , being reason enough to have at least one of these a day.

He also makes special mention of the lessen known macadamia nut. In addition to the Oleic acid value , it is the richest source of the UFAs , Palmitoleic acid which acts as an antioxidant , has hydrating qualities , prevent cell membrane deterioration and has shown to be helpful in restoring damaged and burned skin.

David makes special mention of how the high calorie content of the macadamia nut is negligible due to the increase in fat metabolism caused by the EFA quality and content of the calorie source.

  1. Alpha-linolenic Acid ( LNA ) – Omega 3 and
  2. Linoleic Acid ( LA ) – Omega 6 – found in flax , hemp seed , linseeds, walnuts and dark leafy greens are called Essential Fatty Acids ( EFAs ).

The naming of omega-3 , omega-6 and omega-9 is simply derived from the positioning of the first carbon where a double bond is formed within the molecular structure.

EFAs attract oxygen and once again I have to make reference to Udo calling these beauties oxygen “magnets”. EFA’s are part of all our cell membranes.

EFAs has a slight negative charge , making them act in an opposite fashion to the “sticky” UFAs. They repel each other , making them super reactive and keeping the membranes fluid.

EFAs are also the precursors to prostaglandins. They are short lived , hormone like substances which regulate many cell functions.

This quality makes their presence in the structures responsible for: protein synthesis , secretion of substances out of cells , transport of substances in and out of the cells , release of energy out of cells , storage of products made by the nucleus of the cells and the chromosomes which carry the entire operational system plan of our body – vital to our optimal health.

LA and LNA shorten the recovery time for fatigued muscles due to their input during the conversion of lactic acid to water and carbon dioxide.

LA specifically help produce red blood cells ( hemoglobin ).

Linoleic ( LA ) acid is also the EFA with the highest daily requirement.

EFAs , particularly the omega-3 family are strong anti-oxidants , provide an immune boost , burn excess fat and play an important role in beautiful skin.

Hemp seeds are the only food that has the exact ration of omega-3 to omega-6 for optimal functioning. It also contains Gamma-linolenic Acid ( GLA ) part of the omega-6 family. Flax seeds provide a therapeutic quantity of omega-3.

  1. Eicosapentaenoic Acid ( EPA ) and
  2. Docasahexaenoic Acid ( DHA ) form part of the omega-3 EFAs family.

From the general qualities discussed above , we can understand why these EFAs are such key components to the most active organs in our body : brain , nerve relay stations ( synapses ) , sense organs ( retinas ) , adrenal glands and testes.

We are all familiar to the better known source of these two – being fish oils , especially mackerel , salmon , trout and sardines.

The challenge we are facing with our current water pollution situation is that the measures of radioactive compounds and mercury content are at toxic levels. To make the situation worst , both mercury and radioactive compounds are particularly attracted to fatty tissue – making the choice of getting our EPA and DHA from the ocean no longer a viable option.

Over the last decade more and more mention has been made of eating lower down on the food chain. It lessens the possibility of environmental toxicity captured in the tissue and also offers environmental relief on the massive environmental resource demand of producing large quantities of live stock.

The good news is that DHA and EPA can be manufactured by LNA , which as mentioned before is abundantly available in flax , hemp and also Chia seeds.

The one very important bit of information I have been holding back is .. when avo’s are not in season and your flax and hemp seed containers are empty – just ensure you always have a bottle of Udo’s oil in your pantry.

Udo Erasmus made it his life work to put together the perfect proportion of omega-3 , omega-6 , omega-9 our bodies want to perform at peak level.

After years of intense research on the topic he found the the ratio is :

Omega -3 , 6 , 9 = 2 : 1 : 1

He also found that the most damaging fats are found in margarines , shortenings and heated oils.

After reading all of the above – and once again realizing a lot of scientific names and terminology had to be used – I am hoping to see guilt free gulps of olive oil , bigger slices of avo , jars – abundant with macadamia nuts and hemp seeds as standard pantry items in your house. ( A bottle of Udo’s oil – purchased from your favorite Wellness Warehouse branch needs not even be repeated )

Also , if you would so wish , a copy of Dr Udo Erasmus’ book on your reading shelf. Even as it might not be a summer romance , I promise chapters of inspiring red wine drinking and how to keep your fur kids healthy – all just to much to squeeze into one article J

Calcium supplementation- the controversial truth no one wants to tell you

It is with a sense of sadness that a recent health issue my Mom experienced -brought to my attention the fact that the culture of popping a pill to solve any health issue has made its way into the world of Nutritional Supplementation.

In a society of only treating the symptom and not the reason for the illness – it is no wonder that chronic medication is simply part of life when you reach a certain age.

Calcification is a topic not often heard in discussions among health care professionals  – rather the Bone density issue and how to cure with some Calcium supplements.

In the Longevity Now program which David Wolfe offers he talks in depth about the negative effect of calcification in the body.

Let me list a few illnesses and diseases directly linked to calcification:

Aches in your muscles or arthritic joint pains
Cataracts in your eyes
Loss of hearing
Kidney stones
Calcification of the coronary artery
Hardening of body systems – traditionally blamed on the natural process of aging.
..just getting older and more wrinkled

Hmmmm – got your attention ?

The body can only absorb that which it recognizes as natural goodness – any foreign substance is stored as toxic waste either in the fatty tissue, liver, plague growth in the blood vessels, or other organs.

Most Calcium supplements are “dead” calcium – oyster shell residue , coral residue , mineral residues from the earth. ( calcium citrate / calcium carbonate ) Imagine how your insides would feel if you go outside and munch on a few spoons full of soil – not so great , right ?
Scientific experimentation done at the university of Kuopio in Finland by E.Olavi Kajander and Neva Ciftcioglu has successfully identified the presence of shell forming Nanobacteria in these substances which are responsible for the recycling of organisms by forming a biofilm around the dead creature which then hardens into a calcified dormant state of Calcium Phosphate.

These nanobacteria also has the ability to reproduce , forming aggregate – clogging up our system silently until a calcification disease shows it’s ugly head.

Great way of nature to “clean up” – not so good to be happening on the inside of your body.

We are lucky to have various studies like the China Study where several accurate scientific experiments have been performed to indicate that all nutritional elements are more readily available for human absorption if it originates from a plant based source.
This is also true for Calcium. “Bad calcium”  is positively charged. Good calcium contain a surplus of electrons, making them negatively charged – which is what naturally occurs in plants , vegetables , wheatgrass , citrus fruit , carob and mesquite.
IMG_1668
The ground breaking research of French scientist Professor CL Kervran also proved the transmutation of supplemental silicon ( horsetail , hemp leaf , sprouts ) and magnesium ( chlorella, cacao , green leafy vegetables ) into calcium in the bones. Indicating once again that the theory of taking in calcium for your bone density might not be the most accurate solution.
Rudolph Steiner has been a keen activist on horsetail and nettle for bone strength – supporting the research of Professor Kervran.

I am naturally a firm believer of growing your own organic food from nutrient rich soil as far as possible to ensure you do get all the nutrition the plant offers.

Good news is that our wonderfully body is completely capable of reversing the damage done by calcification.
Start shopping for your calcium in the organic produce section of the shop and stop any “dead” calcium supplement ( pearl calcium is the only exception)
Dissolve the “bad” calcium by consuming citrus ( one lemon or lime a day – as more can make the body too acidic )
Taking products such as Zeolites , MSM and Fulvic acid to eliminate the toxic substance from your body.
Boost your immune system with medicinal mushrooms and garlic extracts.
Rejuvenate your body with adaptogen herbs , probiotics , superfood Vit C powders , marine phytoplankton.IMG_1932.jpg
